HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Troy softball team dropped a second straight game to Southern Miss, losing 7-3 in the second game of the series. The Trojans (20-12, 2-3 SBC) couldn't muster the offense to keep up with the Golden Eagles (16-15, 3-2 SBC) as two big innings paced the home team.
Makaley Boswell was the only Trojan with multiple hits, as she went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Her RBI double in the seventh inning scored a run for Troy, but it wasn't enough to close the five-run deficit.
Caiden Oliva went 1-for-3 on the afternoon, blasting a solo home run to center field in the fourth inning – her fifth of the season. After going 3-for-3 last night, Taylor McKinney went 1-for-4 with an RBI single.
Southern Miss third baseman Mikaila Fox had a 2-for-3, two RBI game to lead the team's offense. The Golden Eagles used a three-run third inning and a four-run sixth inning to take the win and the series victory.
Although Kayden Dunn dropped a single into center field, Troy wasn't able to score in the top of the first inning. Holt worked a one-two-three inning, striking out a Southern Miss batter to end the frame.
Mya Holt (8-3) ended a quick second inning with three straight groundouts, and the Trojans struck in the third inning.
With two outs in the inning, Boswell roped a double into right-center field. McKinney continued her torrid streak with a single to bring the leadoff hitter home and give Troy a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, Oliva got a run back for the Trojans with a moonshot to center field, cutting the deficit to 3-2. While Southern Miss put two runners on in the bottom of the fourth, Esmee Ames entered and worked out of the jam.
Although Natalie Turner led off the fifth inning with a triple – her first of the season – the Trojans popped out three straight times to end the inning.
Southern Miss broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring four more runs to take a 7-2 lead.
Boswell drove an RBI double into right-center field to score Mia Tidmore in the seventh innings, but Troy didn't score any more runs.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"I'm going to be honest, that was not good softball for us. It's super disappointing and I'm trying to put a finger on it for sure. I need to figure out where we've gone wrong. I tip my cap to Southern Miss – they're out-executing us pitching wise, offensively and defensively. We look lethargic, we're playing good softball or making good decisions. The line in the sand starts tonight, and we'll work on making adjustments and figuring it out by tomorrow."
