HUMBLE, Texas – Paced by a pair in the top four, the Troy men's golf team sits in second place following Monday's opening two rounds of The All-American Intercollegiate at the Golf Club of Houston; the Trojans have a 10-shot lead over No. 16 UNLV heading into the final round.
Troy shot under-par in both rounds on Monday, its 10th and 11th rounds in the red this season as a team in just 23 overall team rounds. The Trojans opened with a 6-under in the morning and followed with a 5-under in the second round; Troy has been under-par in four of its last five rounds.
No. 60 Houston leads the team race by 10 shots over the Trojans after the host squad shot 21-under on the day. Southern Miss sits in third and No. 53 TCU is fourth.
"We played some really good golf today on a difficult golf course," head coach Clay Bounds said. "Again, the wind was blowing, and we played the tough holes pretty well. There's a reason this golf course hosted a PGA Tour event for many years. It's a big golf course, but it suits our games well. I'm proud of the way we played."
Jake Springer is Troy's clubhouse leader at 5-under after rounds of 70 and 68, while Brantley Scott, who ranks 28th nationally, is a shot back in a tie for fourth after shooting 5-under 67 in the afternoon session.
Scott's 10 birdies rank second in the field, while Nick Fowlkes is one behind in a tie for fifth. Lee Poppell carded one of nine eagles on the day and was third with 28th pars. As a team, Troy ranks third with 35 birdies and its 20 bogeys were the fewest in the field.
Fowlkes was winning the individual race midway through the front nine of the second round after three birdies pushed his overall card to 7-under after 23 holes. However, he shot 8-over in his final 13 holes to finish 1-over for the day and tied for 23rd place.
Pablo Gracia shot 72-73 and is tied with Fowlkes, while Poppell is a shot back of the pair in a tie for 29th place at 2-over.
In the individual tournament, Laurez Kubin is tied for 14th place at 6-over, while Jason Quinlan is tied for 16thplace at 7-over.
Both the team and individual tournaments conclude on Tuesday.
