TROY, Ala. – Troy softball jumped on three-time Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week Nicolette Picone, scoring three runs in the first two innings of a 5-1 win. The Trojans (20-10, 2-1 SBC) took the series win over Coastal Carolina (23-6, 1-2 SBC) with a dominant victory over one of the nation's top offenses.
To start Sun Belt play, the Trojans dropped the Chanticleers, who entered the weekend ranked No. 19 in the NCAA RPI. Troy captured the series win with two straight victories after a ten-inning loss on Friday.
Alyssa Faircloth (9-3) locked down the Chanticleers, spinning seven innings and not surrendering a run until the last inning. The southpaw allowed three hits, striking out one Coastal Carolina batter.
Kayden Dunn was the only Trojan to record a multi-hit game – the first baseman went 2-for-3, driving in a run and blasting a double. Caiden Oliva delivered the body blow on offense, smacking an RBI triple down the first base line in the fifth inning that knocked Picone out of the game. She went 1-for-3 on the day.
To start the game, Faircloth worked a scoreless first, striking out Delaney Keith in the process. After going eight innings before scoring on Picone on Friday night, the Trojans struck in the first inning of Sunday's game.
Makaley Boswell led off the bottom of the inning with a bouncing single up the middle. She advanced to third base on two groundouts, scoring on a wild pitch to give Troy a 1-0 lead.
Dunn lined a double to right-center field and Reaghan Oney pushed a single up the middle to bring her home.
Faircloth protected the 2-0 lead with her second straight one-two-three inning, retiring the Chanticleers in order.
Troy expanded on the lead in the second inning – Sarah Beth Brake led off the frame with a double, and McKinnon Howard bunted safely for a single soon after. Boswell made it a 3-0 game with an RBI groundout.
Although Faircloth walked two batters in the third, she worked out of the inning without allowing a run. She also pitched a scoreless fourth inning.
While the Trojans were shut down in the third and fourth innings, Faircloth continued the scoreless outing in the fifth inning. She worked around Coastal Carolina's first hit of the game to keep the lead where it was.
After Taylor McKinney punched a single through the right side of the infield, Oliva hit a triple down the first base line to make it a 4-0 game. Dunn brought the second run home with a line-drive single over the shortstop's head, forcing Picone out of the game.
A quiet sixth inning set the table for Faircloth to close the game out in the seventh. While she allowed one run in the inning, she ended the game with a groundout to shortstop.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"What a day, right? We're excited about winning the weekend and winning the series against Coastal. They were super hot, but we're proud of the team and the way we responded. We came out in the first inning and scored a couple runs, getting three in the first two innings. Alyssa Faircloth is proving that she's one of the best pitchers in this league."
