THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Coming off its second tournament victory of the season, the Troy men's golf team turned in another solid performance this week, finishing second at the Seminole Intercollegiate while picking up victories over a trio of teams ranked ahead of them in the national rankings.
Troy finished the week at 11-under as a team, second only to No. 15 Florida State's 23-under. The Trojans finished 33 shots ahead of No. 51 Arkansas, 32 shots better than No. 55 Furman and eight shots in front of No. 56 Florida Gulf Coast.
"Our guys played some amazing golf this week," head coach Clay Bounds said. "The only team we lost to was No. 15 in the country and the host school. The golf course set up really well for our game and the guys proved that by beating a lot of teams by a number of strokes; very proud of our fight."
Reigning Sun Belt Men's Golfer of the Week Brantley Scott made a case for back-to-back awards as he finished second at 10-under, including a program record 62 (8-under) in Monday's second round. Since returning from injury, Scott has played seven consecutive rounds at par or lower, with five of those coming in the red.
"Very proud of Brantley as well," Bounds added. "He finished second to the No.1 amateur in the entire world. It was another great week for him."
Scott finished second to Florida State's Luke Canton, the nation's No. 27-ranked player, by just five shots. He finished the week with 14 birdies, fourth-most in the field, and finished second in the tournament with a cumulative 6-under on the par-4s. Scott carded just four bogeys during the tournament (all in the third round) and his 200 is the lowest recorded round by a Trojan since at least the 2005-06 season.
Nick Fowlkes turned in a top-two card for the Trojans for the fifth time in seven events this season after closing the week in a tie for fifth place. He paced the field with a pair of eagles, both coming over a three-hole stretch in Monday's opening round as he holed out on the par-4 fifth and the par-5 seventh during his round of 3-under. He finished the week 5-under, with 11 birdies to go along with the pair of eagles.
Jake Springer tied for 19th place, his sixth top-25 finish in seven events this season after shooting 1-over for the week, while Pablo Gracia and Lee Poppell tied for 52nd place.
Troy wraps up its run of three straight weeks with an event next Monday and Tuesday at the All-American Intercollegiate, hosted by Houston at the Golf Club of Houston.
