Women’s Tennis Defeats Samford, 4-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After a 12-day hiatus from the courts, the Troy women's tennis team put together an impressive 4-2 win over Samford on Friday afternoon.

Troy (4-4) has won three of its last four matches after getting off to a slower start this spring, and Friday's showing was its best victory of the young season. Samford (7-4) entered the contest having won three of its previous four matches.

The Bulldogs got off to a strong start in doubles, picking up a 6-2 win on court 3 and a 6-1 win on court 2 to clinch the early 1-0 lead In the match. The third doubles match went unfinished with Samford leading. Troy had been 0-3 this season when losing the doubles point.

Samford's strong play carried over into singles, as it took a 2-0 lead with a win in the No. 6 spot. Troy, however, had a big answer and responded with four straight singles wins to clinch the team victory.

Leena Metally got Troy on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot to cut the deficit in half. It was Metwally's third win of the season. Troy evened things up at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-0 win in the top spot by Gabrielle Leslie, who moves to 2-5 in dual play.

The Trojans got their first lead of the night thanks to a 6-1, 7-5 win at the No. 4 spot from Valeriia Avdeeva. She continues to be the most consistent singles player for Troy this spring and is now 6-1 in singles since the calendar flipped over to 2025.

After dropping the first set, Maria Guirguis rallied for the match-clinching 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 2 spot. Guirguis is now 5-3 this spring in singles, with all her victories coming on court 2.

The final singles match went unfinished.
