DABARY, Fla. – The Troy women's golf team sits in a tie for fourth place following Monday's opening two rounds of the Babs Steffens Invitational behind a strong performance from freshman Mathilda Ringblom at the DeBary Country Club.
Ringblom, who is playing for just the second time in her Trojan career, carded three birdies over her two rounds and sits in a tie for 10th place at 6-over par. She shot 3-over 75 in both of her rounds, carding a birdie on the 16th in both rounds and adding one on the par-4 15th in her afternoon session.
Troy improved by 11 strokes from its first to second round as the Trojans carded seven birdies on their second trip through the course compared to six in the morning. However, the biggest difference came in limiting the big number. In the morning, Troy had eight double-bogeys or worse, including a pair of 9s on par-5s, while in the afternoon, it limited the damage to just six such holes.
The Trojans are tied for fourth place at 33-over par as a team, just seven shots back of Jacksonville in second place. Host-Stetson shot 5-over and holds a 21-shot lead over the Dolphins.
Katelynn Altese dropped in a pair of birdies in her afternoon round to shoot 8-over on the day, good for a tie for 17th place, while Alyssa Mercado is tied for 21st place at 10-over, thanks to a pair of birdies in the second rounds. Troy's leaders in the fall, Laura Fangmeyer and Victoria Stutts, struggled on Monday, shooting 15-over and 17-over, respectively.
Troy will play with Keiser and Queens in Tuesday's final round.
