TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's golf team opens its spring season Monday and Tuesday at the Babs Steffens Invitational, hosted by Stetson at the DeBary Country Club in DeBary, Fla.
Troy is coming off a strong fall, which saw the Trojans finish third at the Green Wave Invitational and fourth out of 17 teams at the Lady Red Wolves Fall Classic.
"I'm really excited about our progress during the break," head coach Randy Keck said. "We have had probably the best offseason that we've had since I've been at Troy. Everyone has come back ready to go golf-wise and physically; we've played a lot of quality golf leading into this spring."
The Trojans had two clear leaders in the fall in juniors Laura Fangmeyer and Victoria Stutts. The former paced Troy with a 1.54 score vs. par, two rounds in the 60s and three total rounds under par, while the latter led the Trojans with all 11 of her rounds counting towards the team card and ranking second with a 1.73 score vs. par and two rounds under par.
"The maturity level of this team will carry us this spring," Keck said. "We've got a little bit of an older team, and they are hungry. We thought we played well enough to win once or twice in the fall, and that left a bad taste in our mouth."
Alyssa Mercado and Katelynn Altese bring more experience to Keck's lineup for the spring opener after the pair combined to play 24 rounds in the spring. Mercado, who grew up playing at DeBary Country Club, posted a 4.55 score vs. par in the fall, while Altese shot Troy's other round under-par and finished with a 4.77 score vs. par. Mathilda Ringblom will make her second appearance in the lineup for the Trojans to round out the lineup.
"It's a new golf course for us, but Alyssa having played a lot of golf there is going to help us, especially during the practice round," Keck said. "It's a course that got hit by the hurricane a couple years ago, so it's wide open and a big-hitters course, which fits our game nicely."
