FORT MYERS, Fla. – Troy men's basketball (4-4) suffered its second straight defeat on Monday afternoon, falling to Toledo, 75-68 in the opening game of the Coconut Hoops event inside Alico Arena.
Theo Seng provided 18 points for the Trojans, who were unable to find the bottom of the basket all afternoon, shooting just 5-for-28 from three-point range.
Toledo (4-2) received a standout performance from Sonny Wilson, who scored 21 points. Wilson shot 9-for-12 from the field and added four rebounds.
The opening minutes of the game saw both teams trading baskets, with Troy holding a 6-4 lead at the first media timeout. Theo Seng scored the first six points for the Trojans, as well as nine in the first seven minutes. Seng finished the first half with a game-high 14 points.
Toledo went on its first-half run following the under-eight media timeout, using a 10-2 run to take a seven-point lead at 30-23. Sonny Wilson and Kyler VanderJagt paced the Rockets with seven first half points apiece.
That would be all for Toledo in the first half however, as Troy went on a 13-0 run over the last 4:19 of the first half. Cooper Campbell knocked down a fadeaway jump shot in the final seconds of the half to give the Trojans a 36-30 lead heading into the locker room.
Cooper Campbell made one of Troy's five threes to open the second half, making it a 16-0 Trojans' run overall. That would be Troy's largest lead of the game, and Toledo would lead five minutes into the second half at 46-45.
This was part of another run, as Toledo scored 12 straight points to build a 10-point lead, which they would hold onto until five minutes to go in the game.
There, Troy showed fight, and a layup plus the foul from Campbell cut the Rockets' lead to two with two minutes remaining. Despite this, made free throws down the stretch allowed Toledo to win its fourth-straight game, 75-68.
Quotable – Head Coach Scott Cross
"We weren't connected on both sides of the ball, offensively and defensively. Guys were trying too hard to make plays, we were scoreboard watching, and we were worried about the officials too much. We just didn't have the same levels of toughness, grit, and connectivity that we've had in the previous two games."
