TROY, Ala. – Troy senior Devin Lafayette has been named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week after recording 19 tackles in the Trojans' victory over South Alabama in the "Battle for the Belt".
Lafayette recorded nine solo tackles and 10 assisted tackles, including a tackle on South Alabama's lone third down in overtime to force the decisive fourth down stop.
The Brunswick, Ga., native's 19 stops were the most by a Troy player not named Carlton Martial since 2012 and the most by a Sun Belt player not named Martial or Jason Henderson (ODU) since 2019. His performance tied for the 16th most in conference history, helping Troy hold South Alabama to 104 passing yards in the game – the eighth fewest in South Alabama program history.
Lafayette is the fourth Trojan to earn a weekly SBC honor this season, joining Luke Hodge (defense), Tae Meadows (offense) and Evan Crenshaw (special teams). He ranks ninth nationally and second in the Sun Belt, averaging 10.2 tackles per game.
Troy has won four of its last five Sun Belt games heading into this weekend's matchup at Texas State.
