TROY, Ala. – Troy volleyball was unable to overcome 28 attack errors, falling in three sets to one against Georgia Southern inside Trojan Arena Friday night.
Troy's (3-10, 1-4 SBC) Amiah Butler was one kill shy of her career high, finishing the match with 23 kills (23-11-56) en route to her third double-double of the season (23 kills, 13 digs). Emma Blaine added eight kills (8-2-17) on a .353 percentage, while Jordan Sinness tallied 25 assists.
Georgia Southern (13-3, 4-1 SBC) hit .259 as a team behind Reagan Barth's 17 kills (17-5-46). Sun Belt assist leader Kirsten Barret continued to put up impressive numbers, providing 40 assists for the Eagles. The Georgia Southern block provided a large edge for the visitors, outblocking the Trojans 12.0 to 2.0 on the night.
Set 1 – Ga. Southern 25, TROY 19
Ga. Southern opened the match at a fiery pace, hitting an impressive .452 in the opening set. Bath put down seven kills, and Maddie Cugino recorded nine of her 36 digs. The frame was tied at 11, but the Eagles opened up a comfortable four-point lead at 18-14 and did not give it back, winning the first set.
Set 2 – Ga. Southern 25, TROY 19
Troy fell behind quickly in the second, trailing 1-5 and 5-10 early. Blaine, Kalina Calvillo and Ashlynn Axtell all picked up three kills, but the Eagles' four blocks stifled the Trojan offense en route to a 2-0 match lead.
Set 3 – TROY 25, Ga. Southern 16
The two teams traded points early, sitting tied 5-5 after the first 10 points. Troy then went on a 10-5 run to take control of the set, which it would ultimately close out comfortably. Amiah Butler finished the set with six kills and eight digs, while the Trojans as a team hit their best percentage of the match at .292.
Set 4 – Ga. Southern 25, TROY 20
The most competitive set of the match was the fourth and final set, featuring eight ties and four lead changes. Troy owned a 15-10 lead, but Ga. Southern took the next six points, giving the Eagles the lead. The lead didn't last long, as the Trojans won the next three points, but another late run from Georgia Southern — including the final five points — sealed the set and the match.
Quotable – Head Coach Josh Lauer
"We weren't consistent enough to win tonight, and it cost us the match. 17 unforced errors and that was the difference. We had a lead there in the fourth to send it to the fifth but just got too error prone. Tough lesson, but hopefully it's something we can wrap our heads around and accept that challenge tomorrow, that we need to play a little cleaner volleyball."
