MONROE, La. – After dropping both of its home games last week, the Troy men's basketball team returned to the win column on Wednesday, as it dominated ULM 77-58 in the Fant-Ewing Coliseum to remain undefeated on the road during conference play.
Troy (11-6, 4-2 SBC) got remarkable performances from a number of players, most notably Tayton Conerway, who recorded the second double-double of the season for Troy.
Conerway had 10 points and 12 assists to become the first Trojan to record a double-double with points and assists since Will Weathers (12-12) on Jan. 21, 2012, against ULM. The 12 assists are a career-high for Conerway. It's also the first time a Troy player has had 10 or more assists in a game since Weathers' 2012 performance.
ULM (4-15, 0-6 SBC) had no answer for the Trojans starting backcourt, as in addition to Conerway's showing, Cooper Campbell – making his first road start – scored a team and career-high 16 points on 7-13 shooting.
Troy came out of the gates on a 9-3 run thanks to five quick points from Thomas Dowd. The sophomore big man played strong all night, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds. It's the fifth time this season Dowd has scored in double-figures and was just one point shy of his season high (14 at New Orleans).
The Warhawks started to settle in on both ends of the court and were able to take an 18-16 lead with 11:17 left in the first half of play. Troy, who was sloppy with the ball for much of the half, started shooting the ball better and went on a 13-4 run to take a 29-22 lead. ULM responded with an 8-0 run to retake a 30-29 lead with less than three minutes left before the break.
Thanks to a pair of threes by Campbell and Victor Valdes, the Trojans took a 35-30 lead into halftime. Going into Wednesday, Troy was 9-3 (2-2 SBC) when leading at half.
Troy came out of the locker room on fire, going on a 14-2 run in the first 4:06 of the second half to take a commanding 17-point lead. The Trojans led by double figures for the remainder of the night, and their lead was never smaller than 12. Troy turned it over just five times in the final 20 minutes compared to eight times in the first half.
On the night, Troy finished with a 48.4 percent shooting clip, while going 11-31 (35.5 percent) from the 3-point line. The Trojans are 5-1 this season when scoring 10 or more 3-pointers, with its only loss coming on Saturday against Arkansas State.
The Trojans also finished with a season-high 21 assists. It's the most assists against a D-I team for the Trojans since they had 21 against South Alabama on Feb. 7, 2020 – Scott Cross' first year as the Troy head coach.
Troy led in points in the paint (36-16), second chance points (16-14), fastbreak points (18-8) and bench points (21-16). The Trojans outrebounded the Warhawks 48-32 and are now 8-3 (2-1 SBC) when winning the rebounding battle. Kerrington Kiel finished the night with a team and career-high 10 rebounds, while Dowd had nine. Kiel now joins Jackson Fields (10 at New Orleans) as the only player to have double-digit rebounds in a game this season.
Troy held ULM to 31.8 percent from the field and 29.6 percent from distance. The Trojans are 6-0 (3-0 SBC) when holding its opponents to under 40 percent shooting on the season. Coltie Young and Jacob Wilson each had 16 points for the Warhawks.
Quotable – head coach Scott Cross
"We did a lot of good things. I thought we played really well offensively. We had 21 assists to 13 turnovers. I would like the turnover number to be a little bit lower, but man that assists number is a beautiful thing. I can't remember the last time we had 20 assists. We were really moving the ball and sharing the ball. Made 11 threes: that's really good for us. I am super happy that Thomas Dowd got going, and man, what a job Kerrington Kiel did."
