GADSDEN, Ala. – After opening the season with a victory two weeks ago, the Troy men's golf team is off to a good start in its encore performance, as the Trojans are in second place following Sunday's opening round of the Graeme McDowell Invitational at the Limestone Springs Golf Course.

Troy shot 9-under as a team on Sunday for its second under-par round out of four this season. Lee Poppell and Jake Springer led the way for the Trojans as the duo shot matching rounds of 69, good for a tie for 10^thplace.

Poppell eagled the par-5 second and made the turn 3-under with a pair of birdies around a bogey before splitting a pair of birdies around two bogeys on the back. Springer played a much cleaner round as he made the turn even before adding birdies on the 11^th, 13^th and 18^th to shoot 33 on the back.

Troy is four shots back of North Alabama with 36 holes to play, while the Trojans have a one-shot advantage over ULM and Lipscomb and a three-shot lead on Louisiana Tech. Memphis' Yixiang Wang is two shots clear of Troy's clubhouse leaders and is one shot up on eight golfers in second place.

Pablo Gracia shot in the red for the first time this season, with a 2-under 70 to finish the day tied for 17^th place, led by an eagle on the par-5 eighth, while Nick Fowlkes is tied for 25^th place at 1-under after carding four birdies on the day: however, a seven on the par-5 11^th flipped his back nine in the black.

Playing as an individual, Grant Yerger shot 73 in his collegiate debut with four birdies, while Jason Quinlan rounded out the field for the Trojans in a tie for 65^th place at 5-over.
