TROY, Ala. – Coming off a season-opening victory two weeks ago, the Troy men's golf team returns to action Sunday with the opening round of the Graeme McDowell Invitational at the Limestone Springs Golf Course in Gadsden, Ala.
Troy head coach Clay Bounds will roll out his same lineup from the victory, led by Nick Fowlkes and Jason Quinlan, who had top 10 finishes at the Argent Financial Classic.
"The practice round is going to be huge for us to get an idea of the course and put together a good game plan for the week," Bounds said. "This is a totally different golf course than we saw last week. It has bent grass greens, and the course is tighter, so our longer guys won't have a lot of drivers off the tee."
The Trojans shot 7-under in their victory, defeating Houston by two strokes, as Fowlkes shot 8-under himself to finish second. Fowlkes carded a 6-under 66 in the second round and added rounds of 71 on his first and third trips through the course.
Quinlan tied for 10th thanks to a pair of rounds of 71 to shoot 1-under for the week, while sophomores Lee Poppell and Palbo Gracia hovered around par all week and tied for 20th par. The wild card for Troy this week could be the healthy return of Jake Springer, who tied for 47th in the opener after battling sickness going into the event. Springer led Troy with a 72.70 scoring average last season. Freshman Grant Yerger, a native of Austin, Texas, will make his collegiate debut, playing as an individual.
"The course should set up for some lower scores and the greens will allow for a lot of putts to go in," Bounds said. "As long as we keep the ball in play and make some putts, we should play well."
