Troy University Mourns Passing of Team Physician, Mickey DiChiara

TROY, Ala. -- One of Troy's long-time team physicians, Dr. Peter "Mickey" DiChiara, passed away Monday, Aug. 12, surrounded by his family. Dr. DiChiara spent almost 40 years caring for the needs of Troy student athletes and his legacy and impact continues to be felt by the thousands of Troy student-athletes who he cared for.

Dr. DiChiara began serving as a team physician for Troy Athletics in 1987 when he founded Pike Internal Medicine in the community. He began as the University's Physician Consultant in the Student Health Center in 1990 before taking over as Troy Athletics' primary team physician in 2007.

"On a personal level, Dr. DiChiara was loved by my family and by me," Troy Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. said. "Not only was he our family physician, he was our friend. He will be missed by the community and by all who had the privilege of knowing him."

"Our hearts and our prayers go out to his family, friends and the countless others whose lives were impacted for the better by Dr. DiChiara," Troy Director of Athletics Brent Jones said.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 16, at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery. A casual Celebration will be held Thursday, August 15, from 5-8 p.m. at Kendall Hall in downtown Troy.
