TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's basketball team returns from its eight-day foreign tour to Costa Rica enriched via on-court and off-court experiences, including numerous memorable excursions, enlightened volunteer events and intense exhibition games.
"The phrase, 'thank you,' doesn't seem to be enough to say to Troy University for this opportunity," head coach Chanda Rigby said. "This trip enriched my life and expanded the world of those I love (my staff and team). I'm so grateful for our experiences in another country. We are all returning home better Trojans."
Troy arrived on July 18 in San Jose and immediately immersed itself in the Costa Rican culture and history by venturing into the city, where the team visited numerous museums. The trip into the nation's capital included visits to art and gold museums, the national basilica and local markets.
The first day culminated with a kid's clinic, where the Trojans led numerous basketball drills before facing its first opponent on-court. Troy's new roster, featuring nine additions, walked away victorious, 94-50. The newcomers shined as Adriana Jones led the team in scoring with 23 points on 7-of-10 from the field, followed by Emani Jenkins with 18 and Ashley Baez at 12. On the boards, three Trojans ended in double-figures (Zay Dyer – 17, Brianna Jackson – 12, Emma Imevbore – 10).
Jenkins followed her performance in game two, which Troy won 78-56, with a team-high 15 points, followed by 10-point performances by Imevbore and Baez. Fortuna Ngnawo and Jamirica Roberson led Troy in rebounding with 13 apiece.
While in San Jose, the Trojans also visited a coffee plantation, learning in extensive detail the creation and process of its creation, and they followed it by hiking through the La Paz Waterfall. On their hike, the Trojans experienced the vast wildlife of Costa Rica, including various tropical birds, jaguars, butterflies, snakes and a sloth.
After three days in San Jose, Troy traveled to Los Sueños and Jaco, visiting a local orphanage and playing soccer and basketball. Then, the Trojans went on excursions via ATVs, horseback riding and a private Catamaran over the next three days.
On ATVs and horses, Troy women's basketball explored the rainforest of Jaco and conquered the mountains. Meanwhile, on the Catamaran excursion, Troy players swam in the Pacific Ocean and found their way to the beach and a private waterfall experience.
With the Trojans returning home, they set their sights on November 4, where they open the 2024-25 campaign in the MAC-SBC Challenge against Buffalo.
