TROY, Ala. – Troy volleyball will embark on its inaugural foreign trip to Costa Rica from July 24 to Aug. 1, where it will compete against foreign teams, engage in community events and immerse itself into the Costa Rican environment and culture.
"Our team is very excited to be going on the first-ever foreign trip for volleyball here at Troy," head coach Josh Lauer said.
The Trojans depart for San Jose on Wednesday, July 24. They will spend one day there before heading to La Fortuna for four days. The team will then head to Jaco for two days before returning to San Jose for the final two days of the trip.
On the court, Troy will play three matches and host a pair of youth volleyball clinics. Off the court, the Trojans will participate in multiple community events, including spending time at the center for people with disabilities, visiting an orphanage and organizing activities with kids as part of the single mom project.
Troy's trip to Costa Rica emphasizes an opportunity to immerse the players and staff in the culture. While in San Jose, the Trojans will venture throughout the country's historical capital. In La Fortuna, the Trojans will visit the Chachagua Rainforest, volunteer with a reforestation project by planting endangered species of native trees, enjoy a chocolate-making workshop, hike to turquoise waterfalls and soar through the rainforest on a zip-line canopy tour. In Jaco, Troy will visit the gorgeous sandy beaches, have the opportunity to take surfing lessons and enjoy a sunset dinner on the beach.
"We're very thankful to all the donors, the administration, Dr. Hawkins and Sarah McKenzie in the study abroad office for making this happen. We can't wait for the competition, the community service and the experiences that we will have as a team," Lauer said.
