SAN MARCOS, Texas – Troy left eight on base to drop the series-opener against Texas State, 6-0, off a five-run seventh inning Friday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
Garrett Gainous started the game and, along with the Troy (34-17, 16-9 SBC) defense, held firm after Texas State (25-25, 11-14 SBC) threatened to score in the first off a bunt for Kameron Weil – stole second. Back-to-back flyouts to Ethan Kavanagh and Kole Myers put two outs on the board, but a 4-1 walk put runners on first and third. On his first pitch, Daylan Pena tapped one straight to Tremayne Cobb Jr., who got Troy out of the inning unscathed.
A throwing error for Texas State with Cobb Jr. at-bat put him on second, and Kyle Mock earned the HBP to give Troy a chance to strike. A flyout put Cobb Jr. on third with an opportunity to score, but a groundout to the pitcher brought the third out.
Both sides remained silent until the bottom of the fourth when Aaron Lugo singled up the middle on this first pitch – groundout to Peyton Watts advanced him to second. Gainous put the second out of the inning on the board when he got August Ramirez swinging, but Davis Powell delivered a 1-0 RBI single through the left side, 1-0.
Kavanagh opened the sixth with a 2-2 single to right field before Cobb Jr. doubled to left center on a 2-2 count. With runners on second and third, Texas State made a change at the mound and got out of the inning.
The bottom of the seventh saw the Bobcats explode offensively, loading the bases on a single for Ramirez, a 4-1 walk for Powell and an HBP on Cade Manning. Clete Hartzog battled back to earn one out via a strikeout, but Weil singled to right field to score one, 2-0. A change at the mound briefly stopped the Bobcats as Noah Manning got the ball in play, and Aidan Gilroy got the ball home to Brooks Bryan for the force out. Then, a wild pitch brought Cade Manning home for Texas State, 3-0, before Lugo doubled to left center for three RBIs, 6-0. Beau Fletcher made his first appearance since Georgia State and got Troy out of the inning with a groundout to himself.
Mock kept Troy alive in the ninth with a 4-1 walk before Gilroy put a 0-2 ball in play for the fielder's choice – Mock got caught going to second for the second out. Gilroy advanced to second on a balk, but Rhett McCaffety ended the game on a groundout to take the series opener.
