Sun Belt Postseason Implications Highlight Troy Baseball at No. 12 Coastal Carolina Series

CONWAY, S.C. – The second half of the Sun Belt Conference schedule ramps up the intensity as Troy baseball heads to Conway, S.C., to face No. 12 Coastal Carolina in a three-game series between a pair of teams tied for second in the league standings.

Three teams sit tied for second in the Sun Belt standings, and two in the Trojans (28-14, 11-7 SBC) and Chanticleers (27-13, 11-7 SBC) square off from Friday to Monday with hopes of narrowing the gap to Louisiana, who sits four games ahead – Southern Miss also sits tied for second.
Troy's fresh off a grueling series with the Panthers of Georgia State, where three games lasted over 15 hours as the teams battled through rain delays. In the end, Troy triumphed 2-1 after falling in game one, 10-8, only to redeem itself in games two, 9-5, and three, 10-7.
Georgia State got its bats rolling in game one, outhitting Troy 16-7 to overcome three errors. From innings four through six, the Panthers totaled nine runs. Kyle Mock and Brooks Bryan still finished with a multi-RBI game as Peyton Watts grabbed the only multi-hit game for the Trojans.
Game two saw redemption when Tremayne Cobb Jr. hammered a solo shot, 1-0, in the second. Despite a three-run homer from Georgia State, 3-1, in the third, Troy scored eight unanswered and held off a late rally to tie the series, 9-5, at one apiece. Three RBI doubles from Myers, Ethan Kavanagh and Aidan Gilroy brought in five runs as No. 5 led the team with three RBIs.
Bryan headlined game three when he accounted for 40 percent of Troy's runs off a grand slam in the seventh for Troy's second four-run inning – first came in the fifth off a pair of singles from Ben Arnett and Watts and a double by Myers. Connor Burt earned his first save when he entered in the top of the eighth and struck out three batters for zero hits.
Through the first half of the Sun Belt schedule, Mock has been atop the charts for batting average with a .429 through 63 at-bats, earning 21 runs, 27 hits, four doubles, five homers, 15 RBIs and 15 walks. He also leads the team in slugging percentage at .730 and on-base percentage at .538. Bryan has been Troy's focal point for RBIs, doubling the next-highest Trojan (Gilroy) with 32.
The Chanticleers enter the weekend series ranked in the top 15 in numerous baseball rankings, topping off at No. 12 in the Perfect Game poll. However, Coastal sits on a two-game losing streak after falling to Creighton in Omaha, 7-3 and 5-4. Their last SBC series saw the Chanticleers top the No. 1 seed Louisiana in games one and three while in Springs Brooks Stadium.
Coastal is a well-rounded team nationally, ranking second in double plays and first for the SBC with 43 – two away from No. 1 ranked Michigan. They also have scored 385 runs to average 9.4 per game, which ranks ninth and 12th nationally, respectively.
