TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's golf team won the GSU Invitational after rain washed out Tuesday's final round. The Trojans entered played on Tuesday with a 6-shot lead over host-Georgia State following 36 holes on Monday and scores reverted back to the start of play due to the inclement weather.
The victory was Troy's first since 2020 when the Trojans won three times before the remainder of the season was canceled due to COVID-19.
"I'm so proud of this group," head coach Randy Keck said. "All of the hard work has finally paid off. We have been getting better and better and felt we were getting close to winning. It feels great for the hard work to come full circle. We look forward to another good event next week leading into the Sun Belt Championship."
Alyssa Mercado and Manya Saini tied for fourth place after shooting matching rounds of 75 and 74 on Monday; they are 5-over par and just six shots off the pace, while Bruna Roqueta carded a 150, with rounds of 77 and 73 to finish tied for eighth place.
The Trojans fired a 292 in the second round, its fourth-lowest round of the year and second-lowest on a par-72 course, an improvement of nine shots from their opening round tally. Troy's 593 36-hole total is its best this season on a par-72 course.
Troy was 10 shots better than Memphis, which finished third, while Murray State was 19 shots behind Troy in fourth, and App State and Little Rock tied for fifth place, 23 shots back.
Saini and Katelynn Altese finished the tournament with six birdies across their two rounds, tied for the second most in the field, while Roqueta added five birdies. Mercado had the third-fewest bogeys in the field with sixth, while Roqueta was one of just seven players without a double-bogey or worse.
