TROY, Ala. – Troy shortened the game by one inning with a three-run eighth to run-rule Florida A&M, 12-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field.
Troy's bats started rolling after Ethan Kavanagh got HBP, and Will Butcher earned a walk to start the bottom of the first. After an error for FAMU on an attempted pickoff to second, both runners advanced to second and third. Then, another walk for Brooks Bryan loaded the bases, and Tremayne Cobb Jr. capitalized with a single to left center, scoring Butcher and Kavanagh, 2-0. Kyle Mock continued the momentum on a double to center, bringing in two more, 4-0, via Cobb Jr. and Bryan.
A pair of walks and a HBP loaded the bases for FAMU in the top of the second. A third walk of the inning via Adam Haidermota scored one, 4-1, for the Rattlers.
Cobb Jr. continued his day at the bottom of the fifth, launching a 380-foot rocket over the left center wall, 5-1, for his third homer of 2024. A double for Mock, a walk for Peyton Watts and an HBP for Gilroy loaded the bases, allowing walks for Myers and Kavanagh to score two, 7-1. Butcher finished the inning with a two-RBI (Myers, Gilroy) double to left field, which pushed the lead to eight, 9-1.
FAMU had one last breath when Joseph Pierini singled up the middle and a groundout advanced him to second in the top of the seventh. Josue Figueroa put the ball in play to advance Pierini to third, and an error by the Trojans allowed the Rattlers to score, 9-2.
A final eighth-inning explosion by Troy captured the 10-run rule when Cobb Jr. walked before Mock singled to center field, and Shane Lewis got HBP. With the bases loaded, Watts captured Troy's 10th of 11 walks to score run No. 10, 10-2. Unselfish play with no outs put the finishing touches on a 12-2 victory when Lance Gardiner sac flew to left field to bring Mock home, and an 11th walk for Jayden Sloan combined with a sac fly for Kavanagh brought pinch runner Parker Sessions in for the winning run.
Head Coach Skylar Meade
"It was a good day at the park. I'm happy the rain pushed off around 2 p.m. so we could get a good day of baseball. It was a great showing by our fans with it being the one time of the year we move up our game in the midweek. There was a lot of unselfish play with the bats. Defensively, we were clean for the most part—only one mistake on the chopper. Our pitching from the second inning onward was really good, and everyone was really good. They showed us a lot of stuff. It was just a good day at the park and now our attention turns to Southern Miss."
