Macon, Ga. – The Troy softball team won its final game of this weekend's tournament with a 12-3 win over Morehead State. The Trojans are leaving Sikes Field without a blemish on their record, winning all five of their games.
Troy had to battle from behind in its final game of the tournament after the Eagles recorded a series of hits to give themselves a 2-0 lead in the opening frame.
The Trojans answered with a three-run second inning. Audra Thompson got the action started with her third homer of the 2024 season which was followed by an error accompanied by a series of base hits including D'Aun Riggs' RBI single to give Troy its first lead of the game.
Troy blew the game out of reach in the following frame thanks to a three-run bomb by Cassidy Boltz and a two-run blast from Kayden Dunn. Boltz plated her fourth RBI of the game in the top of the fourth inning with a single ripped to center field that gave Troy its 9-2 lead.
Morehead State found a late opportunity. In the sixth inning, the Eagles loaded the bases with a double and a pair of walks. A third walk drawn by Kendra Lewis plated their first run since the opening frame.
Olivia Cato shut down the Eagles' final chance of the game, leaving the bases loaded after striking out Karlie Gibson. Cato pitched two innings of relief, striking out two Eagles and only allowing one run.
Haley Pittman started the game and was phenomenal through the first four innings. Pittman recorded six punchouts in her four frames and limited Morehead State to just two runs off four hits.
Thoughts from Coach Newell
"We are 14-4 now, 5-0 from this weekend. But next weekend is a whole new weekend with a new set of opponents and a top-25 program in Mississippi State. We know we are going to have to bring it and reset. We are going to enjoy this weekend for about a day or so and then we are going to prepare for next weekend."
