TROY, Ala. – Following an almost four-month hiatus, the Troy women's golf team returns to the links this weekend as the Trojans open their spring schedule at the ASU Spring Invitational hosted by Alabama State at the RJT Capitol Hill Judge Course.
"We're pretty excited to get back on the course," head coach Randy Keck said. "We've had a good offseason and are off to a good start to our spring practices. The team is playing well coming out of the break, which is usually the hardest time to play well because of the weather, but we're playing better than our normal start to the spring.
"We played six or seven qualifying rounds to get us to the first tournament and had a pair step up and qualify well who didn't play much in the fall, so it's not quite our normal lineup, but excited to see how they do."
Jillian Friyia and Manya Saini qualified for the Trojans in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots in the lineup after playing a combined five tournaments in the fall. In contrast, Alyssa Mercado and Laura Fangmeyer played five tournaments each, while Bruna Roqueta played in four events.
Mercado led Troy in the fall with a 74.13 stroke average over her 15 rounds, including two rounds in the red. Fangmeyer was a shot behind with a 75.13 average, while Roqueta shot 76.58 in the fall. Roqueta saw all nine of her rounds count towards the team card in her three events playing in the lineup, while Mercado and Fangmeyer had 14-of-15 rounds count towards the team score.
"We're playing good golf right now; we're just going to have to go out and play hard and hit a bunch of fairways," Keck said. "This is a difficult golf course; it's long and narrow and has water on both sides of almost every hole. This is going to be a position-type course off the tee, and whoever hits the most fairways will win the tournament."
