TROY, Ala. – The Troy volleyball program had two celebrations on Friday night as it honored seniors Tori Hester, Janelle Stumpfig, Caroline Derracott and Sophie Sparks for senior night and rallied back after set one to finish the regular season on a 3-1 victory over App State in Trojan Arena.
The Trojans (13-13, 8-8 SBC) finish the season at .500 in overall and Sun Belt Conference records as they drop the Mountaineers to 17-8, 11-3 SBC before postseason play and finish fourth in the west division.
On her senior day, Hester continued her attack with 22 kills to lead the Trojans. She also got involved throughout the stat sheet as she ended with one assist, three service aces, nine digs and a block. Audrey Worthington also showed up tonight, leading the team in hitting percentage as she went 8-of-15 for 53.3 percent. The middle-hitter also captured a team-high four blocks.
Worthington wasn't the only Trojan with 3-plus blocks as Kalina Calvillo and Sydney Austin joined her. Sparks also recorded multiple blocks as she earned two rejections.
App State continued its momentum from last night in set one, 25-22, setting the pace with a .432 killing percentage and three services aces to hold a 1-0 lead. However, the Trojans flipped the script in set two, 25-16, on a .344 hitting percentage and .469 attack percentage to tie the match at one.
Set three looked to go the Trojans way as they took the lead 21-14. But the Mountaineers rallied, scoring nine of the following 11 points to tie the match at 23. Neither side gave way to force extra time, but after 62 points were scored, Troy capitalized on a service error by App State, and Austin made the set-winning rejection, 33-31, to take a 2-1 lead.
Troy finished off App State in the fourth set, but not without a late rally by the Mountaineers. Another costly service error by App put Troy two points, 23-16, from the victory. App State got a spur of points on a 5-1 run to keep hopes alive late, 24-21. "It was a really great night. I'm super happy for our seniors to be able to have their last match in Trojan Arena be a victory. It's always easier to have senior night end on a win. Great team contribution and I'm super proud of everybody who returned today and didn't let yesterday's tough loss get them down. We did really great tonight, with a lot of contributions across the board. People really stepped up. Kalina stepped up, Sarah Bates played great defensively, and our serving was on point, which was the match's difference-maker. They are a really great team, one of the best in the Sun Belt. Our side of the tournament plays into App State, and we are going to be prepared to play with other great teams."
