TROY, Ala. – Tai'Sheka Porchia put on a clinic over the week, including a 35-point, 17-rebound performance to defeat Arkansas State in overtime, to earn Sun Belt Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday morning.
"Tai's story is a great example of what can happen when we take a talent that God gives us, and we work consistently and humbly to grow that talent," head coach Chanda Rigby said. "She never tries to draw attention to herself, but now her accomplishments are putting her in the spotlight. Well done, Tai. What a great Trojan."
The 6-1 forward averaged a double-double through her contests against Southern Miss and Arkansas State, scoring 30 points and grabbing 12.5 rebounds – six were offensive. Porchia shot with high efficiency in the field and at the charity stripe on 54.8 and 73.7 percent, respectively. She also managed one steal and one block on the defensive end.
Porchia opened the week on Thursday with 25 points and seven rebounds to lead Troy over the Golden Eagles for the first time in program history, 77-70. She dominated on 8-of-15 from the field and 9-of-12 from the charity stripe. Four of her seven rebounds came on the offensive end, resulting in eight second-chance points. Her best quarter came in the fourth when she scored 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting and swiped two steals.
Saturday saw the Camden, Ark. native raise her game to another level with a career-high 35 points on 15 made field goals – both set team highs for 2023-24 – to lead Troy in an overtime thriller, 91-84, against Arkansas State. She also doubled her rebound numbers offensively at eight and tripled defensively with nine for 17 total. Once again, she saved her best during crunch time, scoring nine points in the fourth quarter to secure overtime and eventually the victory.
Porchia and her fellow Trojans travel to take on ULM in the Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
