Auburn, Ala. – The Troy women's soccer team picked up its first defeat of the season on Sunday night, as they lost 5-0 to in-state opponent Auburn at the Auburn Soccer Complex.
Troy (1-1-0), who opened their season with a 1-0 win against Lipscomb on Thursday, couldn't find the back of the net against the Tigers, as they registered only shots.
Auburn (1-0-1) went ahead in the 14th minute off a goal from Anna Haddock and never looked back. The Tigers added a second goal right before the first-half break, as Maddy Bondon snuck one past Rubie Kelley in the 45th minute.
Auburn continued to add to its score in the second half, with Sydney Richards scoring goals in the 51st and 56th minutes. Marissa Arias closed out the scoring in the 75th minute.
New Faces in Net
Goaltenders Kelley and Stephenie Pereff each made their debut for the Trojans in goal. Kelley played the first half, picking up one save on four shots, including a nice kick save at the end of the half.
Pereff played the first 14 minutes of the second half and almost immediately faced a tough shot, but made a diving save. Kelley re-entered the game in the 59th minute and stayed in for the remainder of the match.
In total, the Trojan goalies faced 17 shots – nine on net – and saved four of them.
Time to Bounce Back
"I thought we played well in the first half, but the goal right before half-time killed us," head coach Stuart Gore said Sunday night. "Tomorrow starts a new day, so we can re-focus and get ready for our upcoming games."
Heading South
The Trojans now gear up for a pair of neutral-site games in Mobile, Ala., this upcoming week as they take on Kennesaw on Thursday, Aug. 24, at 4 p.m. and the Queens of Charlotte on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 12 p.m.
