MOBILE, Ala. – A loud first inning where South Alabama outscored Troy 3-1 in game one Thursday night at Jaguar Field resulted in a final score of 6-1.
The loss keeps Troy (33-16-1, 14-6-1 SBC) from potentially grabbing the second seed, while the Jaguars (36-13, 18-4 SBC) keep their hopes alive for a share of the regular-season title.
Troy got the first strike to open the ballgame when Kelly Horne stepped into the batter's box. The second baseman battled through her at-bat and, on a full count, homered one down the left field line and hit the foul pole, 1-0.
The Jaguars (36-13, 18-4 SBC) responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Meredith Keel led off for USA, doubling on a 2-2 count to center field, followed by a single to shortstop for Mackenzie Brasher. Those hits set up Gabby Stagner and she rocketed a three-run shot to left center, 3-1.
In the top of the fourth, Troy aimed to get back into the ballgame when Anslee Finch doubled deep to right field. Audra Thompson pushed her to third on a sac bunt with Kennedi Gaton and Katelynn de Leon next to bat and one out on the board. However, Olivia Lackie (20-6) kept the Trojans silent after Gaton flew out to left field and de Leon lined one back to her.
USA got some cushion in the fifth on a pair of hits, 4-1. Stagner grabbed a double to left center, allowing a tap up the middle for Sasha Willems to bring her home.
Troy's last opportunity came in the sixth when Finch went back and forth with Lackie, eventually prevailing with a single to center field after an eight-pitch at-bat. After six fouls by Thompson, she rocketed one to shortstop Marly Sims, who made a misthrow to put runners on first and second – passed ball by USA put runners on second and third. With one out on the board, Lackie stepped up for the Jaguars, striking out Gaton and de Leon to get out of the inning – Lackie finished with nine strikeouts.
Tomorrow marks game two of the rivals' three-game series, with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at Jaguar Field.
