HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Entering Friday, The Trojans had turned the 20th most double plays in the country with 42. However, none might have been bigger than their 43rd in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure a 7-6 win over Marshall Friday night to open the series.
With one out and a run home already, Marshall (16-32, 5-20) looked to tie the game and possibly win with the bases loaded. However, Noah Manning had entered the game in the ninth and got the Trojans (34-17, 14-11) over the finish line inducing a ground ball up the middle, which Tremayne Cobb Jr. and Lance Gardiner were able to turn in time. Manning earned his eighth save of the season, which continues to pace the Sun Belt.
After the final out was recorded, Grayson Stewart (8-2) earned his eighth win of the season after going 6.1 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits, four walks, and seven strikeouts.
Despite leaving 15 men on base, the name of the game was patience. The Trojans had six hits, all singles, and were hit by a pitch a season-high seven times, including three times with the bases loaded. It matches the most hit-by-pitches in a game and is the first time since 2005 against Alabama A&M. Troy's Kyle Mock and Cobb Jr. each had two RBI days, Mock was hit twice with the bases full, and Cobb Jr. had two hits, and a run scored.
Patrick Copen (2-8) went five innings but walked seven with five strikeouts while giving up three runs on four hits. Second baseman Luke Edwards had two hits to lead the Herd, and Calin Smith hit his second home run of the season, but it was not enough as Marshall lost their 10th straight game.
Shane Lewis inches closer to the Trojan single-season RBI record picking up his 73rd this afternoon after an RBI single, and Kole Myers finished with his 12th two-hit game.
For the 43rd time in his career, William Sullivan was hit by a pitch which puts him in sole possession of most in Troy baseball history. Sullivan is three away from setting the single-season record.
The top of the sixth was a big inning for Troy, as they scored four runs on just one hit. Myers was hit-by-a pitch to start the inning and scored on the Lewis RBI single two batters later. Three more Trojans would take one for the team, resulting in two runs. The fourth and deciding run came on a balk.
Marshall chipped away at the lead, scoring in each of the last three innings. Zach Fruit relieved Stewart and prevented a big inning in the seventh as he got a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the frame.
Troy and Marshall will continue their three-game series with game two set for 12 p.m. CT tomorrow Saturday, May 13
