Troy Unable to Complete Sweep of Arkansas State

A leadoff walk started it all and was followed by four more free passes, two hit batters, and two errors to create the big inning. The Trojans (22-11, 6-6) used five different pitchers in the frame alone, with Kristian Asbury (2-1) picking up his first loss of the season. Trojan pitchers struck out 10 but also allowed 10 walks.
For the Red Wolves (10-18, 2-8), Cail Daedrick had a four RBI Day on three hits and scored two runs. Jacob Conver (1-0) was the last pitcher used by Arkansas State and got his first win of the season after one inning pitched, allowing one hit, no runs, and a walk.
Shane Lewis had a three RBI game with a two-run home run in the top of the eighth to tie the game. It was his 15th home run of the season, which is the most by a Trojan since Logan Cerny did it in 2021.
For the fifth time this season, the Trojans hit back-to-back home runs as Caleb Bartolero followed Lewis to give Troy the lead. It was Bartolero's seventh of the season, giving him more in 2023 than in any of his previous four seasons at Troy.
Trojan starting pitcher Grayson Stewart threw 90 total pitches in five complete innings. Stewart gave up two runs on five hits while striking out six. Noah Manning appeared in all three games of the series and came in out of the bullpen.
It was a quick outing for Manning as he could only record one out, leaving the ballgame after allowing three runs, two earned on three hits. One of those hits was a home run to put Arkansas State on top.
In his sixth start of the year, Kyler Carmack kept the Trojans in check, going 6.1 innings and striking out five while allowing three earned runs on four hits.
For the third time in the series, the Trojans struck first in the first inning as Kole Myers led off with a double, and after Ethan Kavanagh moved him to third, with William Sullivan hitting a sacrifice fly to put Troy up 1-0.
A leadoff single in the bottom of the third came around to tie the ball game as a wild pitch, and a balk was called on Stewart, bringing in the Red Wolves' first run of the game.
Back-to-back singles from Sullivan and Kyle Mock put pressure on the Red Wolves as a passed ball moved them to second and third. Lewis did his job and made contact hitting a slow chopper to first, giving the first baseman only one play allowing Sullivan to score to give Troy the lead. It was Lewis's 46th RBI of the season.
The Trojans extended the lead in the fifth, as a leadoff walk to Donovan Whibbs, followed by a stolen base, brought Brooks Bryan to the plate. The freshman in a hitter's count laced a single over the shortstop's head to score Whibbs, who easily scored from second.
Troy nearly left the bottom of the fifth unscathed, but the Red Wolves scratched across a run to get back within one. With two outs and a runner on first, Mock nearly made a great diving catch near the right field line, but the ball had popped out of his glove and rolled into foul territory. Stewart came back and got a strikeout to limit the damage.
In the bottom of the sixth, the hosts took the lead after a two-run home run from Cail put Arkansas State up 4-3. It was only Cail's second home run of the year. A fielding error from Sullivan at first trickled into shallow right field, allowing the runner on first to score, giving Arkansas State a two-run advantage and their fifth run of the day.
A prime opportunity presented itself to the Trojans in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with only one out. An infield single from Myers brought home a run to make it a 5-4 game, but that's all the Trojans could manage after a strikeout and ground out to end the threat.
After the back-to-back home runs in the eighth, Troy had two more men on with nobody out, but a foul ball pop up to the catcher, a fielder's choice, and an out at home plate followed to keep it a one-run game for Troy.
The 11 runs given up in the bottom of the eighth is the most since May 7, 2022, against Georgia Southern. The 17 runs scored are the most given up this season.
Troy returns home to Riddle-Pace field on Tuesday, April 11, as they will welcome in-state opponent Samford for a midweek clash.
