MADISON, Miss. – Troy finished in a tie for third place in the stroke play portion of the Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship which concluded Wednesday at the Annandale Golf Club. The result qualifies the Trojans for Thursday's match play to decide the conference champion and automatic berth for the NCAA Championship.
Troy finished in a tie with Louisiana at 6-over par after 54 holes of play, but the Trojans will be the No. 4 seed in match play due to conference tiebreakers. Troy's semifinal matchup pits it against No. 26 Georgia Southern after the Eagles won stroke play by one shot over South Alabama. The Jags and Cajuns will square off in the other semifinal matchup.
"We just kept grinding and fighting all week," head coach Forrest Schultz said. "I'm proud of these guys for fighting back after a disappointing round yesterday to make the shots when we needed them to get into the top four. We've worked on match play situations throughout the year in preparation for what we will face tomorrow."
This is Troy's first appearance in the Sun Belt match play since 2017; after the Trojans made back-to-back appearances in the first two years the league instituted the new format. Troy won the 2016 match play as the No. 2 seed and fell in the semifinals in 2017 as the No. 1 seed.
Thursday's weather forecast in Madison, Mississippi, is not the most favorable for golf, but teams are hopeful of finding a window to get all three matches in. Sun Belt officials are expected to announce tentative timing for Thursday's semifinals later this evening. They have instituted a drop time of 10 a.m. for golfers to hit the course.
Brantley Scott turned in Troy's best finish at a Sun Belt Championship since Clayton Vannoy won the event in 2017 as the Trojan sophomore tied for fourth place, shooting 4-under for the week. He finished the tournament with 11 birdies, the seventh most in the field, and led the way with two eagles.
Scott entered the day as the individual leader but shot 2-over in Wednesday's final round to slip a few spots down the leaderboard.
Nicklas Borrman had the shot of the tournament on 18 as he chipped out of the pine straw from above the green only to see his perfect shot roll in for birdie to cap a 2-under 70 for the Trojan senior. He also birdied No. 17 when the Trojans were neck-and-neck with Coastal Carolina for the final spot in match play.
Borrmann tied for seventh place overall at 1-under for the tournament and finished second to individual medalist Hugo Thyr from South Alabama with a cumulative 3-under on the par-4 holes.
Jason Quinlan turned in his best round of the week with a 1-under 71 thanks to four birdies. He made the turn even, went to 1-over after a bogey on the 10th but responded with a birdie on the par-3 12th and one to close out his round on the 18th, one of three Troy birdies on the final hole.
Jake Springer had an up-and-down day with a team-best five birdies but added six bogeys and a double-bogey to shoot 75 and tie for 42nd place overall, while Will McFadden shot 76 with a pair of birdies to tie for 54th place.
