JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – An eight-run sixth inning blew open the Trojans' midweek contest with Jacksonville State as Troy won 11-1 Tuesday night at Jim Case Stadium for their fourth run-rule victory of the season and fourth straight win over the Gamecocks.
Almost every Trojan contributed on offense tonight for Troy (26-12), as seven players recorded a hit and finished with an RBI, while eight Trojans scored a run. Shane Lewis had his third game with four RBIs this season as he went 2-3. Bartolero followed Lewis with two RBIs giving him 13 games this season, recording more than one.
Five of the Trojans' nine hits came in the top of the sixth inning. For the 24th straight game, Kyle Mock reached base as he drew another walk, and the Trojan offense came to life. A walk to Ethan Kavanagh brought up Tremayne Cobb Jr., who slapped a single for the first run. More patient at-bats loaded the bases, and Kole Myers got a pitch to hit and singled to bring in a run and keep the line moving.
After a Donovan Whibbs walk with the bases loaded, the game was broken open after Lewis cleared the bases with a double. Bartolero followed immediately after with his team-leading 12th double, scoring Lewis. The scoring ended where it began as Mock saw his second plate appearance in the sixth and singled, bringing in the 11th run.
Trojan pitching continues to dominate as Kristian Asbury (3-1), Matt Mercer, and Brandon Schrepf limited the Jacksonville State offense to one run on three hits. Asbury making his second consecutive midweek start, set the tone early as he pitched three scoreless innings, only giving up one hit and two walks. In addition, Asbury fanned five Jacksonville State batters.
Mercer and Schrepf combined for four scoreless innings, only allowing two hits while striking out nine.
Jacksonville State's (17-18) one run came off the bat of T.J. Reeves in the bottom of the fourth. Picking up the loss is Garrett Wade, who came on in the third and allowed three runs on two hits and three walks in 1.2 innings of work.
The third inning saw Troy take a 3-0 lead due to some errors from the hosts. A fielding error allowed Clay Stearns to reach, and a walk and infield single loaded the bases shortly after. The second error of the inning brought home the first run of the evening. Troy continued to tack on more runs as Lewis had an infield single to drive in his 51st RBI of the season.
The inning's third run came courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Bartolero. He nearly cleared the bases, but the center fielder made a nice running catch to limit the damage. It was 4-0 Trojans momentarily, as the catch caused some confusion on the base paths. William Sullivan, who came home to score on a throwing error, was ruled out at second base, having not tagged on time.
Mercer came on after Asbury in relief, and on the first pitch he threw, Reeves put the home team on the board with a solo home run. Mercer settled in after, as Jacksonville State managed nothing after that.
Troy won't return to action for another three days as they get set to host Texas State at Riddle-Pace Field for a three-game Sun Belt series beginning on Friday, April 21, at 6 p.m.
