TROY, Ala. – Playing for the final time at home as a Trojan, Vito Llinares played a match that he will remember forever as he helped lead Troy to a dramatic 4-2 Sun Belt Conference victory over Georgia Southern on Senior Day at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
Llinares was part of the clinching doubles team and then, almost four hours later, rallied from a deep hole on court five to clinch the match for the Trojans (15-6, 3-4 SBC).
Troy and Georgia Southern (14-6, 3-3) split courts one and two in doubles to set up the dramatics on court three. Llinares and Noah Martens trailed 5-1 before rallying to tie the match at 5-all. The Eagle duo had three match points at 5-4 as Llinares and Martens rallied from down 15-40 to force play to continue.
In the tiebreak, the Trojan pair raced out to a 6-0 lead before the Eagles got within 6-5; however, Llinares and Martens forced their opponent into hitting a wide shot to clinch the match and the doubles point.
Llinares dropped the first set in singles and trailed 4-1 in the second set before mounting a furious comeback. He would win 12 of the next 16 games to win the second set 7-5 and the third 6-3.
Carles Anton put the Trojans up 2-0 with a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory on court two before Georgia Southern tied the match with wins on courts three and six.
Mario Martinez Serrano, the Sun Belt's leader in wins, pulled Troy within a point of victory with a three-set win on court one, improving his record to 18-3 in dual matches and 6-1 in Sun Belt action.
Martens was locked in a three-set battle of his own, tied 5-5 when Llinares clinched the match and ended play.
Troy steps out of conference on Saturday to take on Augusta before closing out the regular season at Coastal Carolina on Sunday.
