BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A 55.59m throw in the men's discus throw by Troy's Javon Osbourne shattered the UAB Track & Field Complex record Saturday afternoon to lead four winners at the UAB Spring Invite.
Three of Troy's winners came on the men's side. Besides Osbourne's facility record-breaking performance in the discus throw, Jasai Taylor and Cole Stewart were winners in the 400m hurdles and javelin throw, respectively. On the women's side, Amelia Nettles led a Trojan sweep in the hammer throw.
Nettles led the sweep in the hammer throw event on her fourth throw. Her second throw grabbed first place with a 44.21m before fellow Trojan Abby Grosinske tossed to the 45.27m mark, securing silver. The junior responded on her fourth throw when she launched to the 46.30m mark and held on for first. Leah Kennedy was the first Trojan to temporally hold the gold when her first throw hit 42.81m. She topped it in her second throw with a 43.71m throw to wrap up the podium for Troy.
Osbourne had himself a day in his two events for two top-five finishes. In the javelin throw, Osbourne slowly crept to the podium before falling to fourth, improving from 46.20m to 51.73m between his first and fifth throws. His biggest event came in the discus throw, holding the lead throughout the event. In his third throw, Osbourne tossed a 55.17m throw to break the UAB Track & Field Complex record of 53.61m for the gold. Anthony Symile (fourth) and Tayjo Oppong (fifth) joined him in the top five for the discus with 47.57m and 45.31m, respectively.
Troy's final win came via freshman Taylor in heat one of the 400m hurdles. From the start, it was a contest between him and a junior from Trevecca Nazarene, Lucas Baggott. When Taylor crossed the line, he finished 0.63 seconds ahead to win the heat. Heat two didn't come close to his time, even with Tristian Abrams coming home eighth for Troy overall.
After two straight meets in Alabama, Troy heads to the Sunshine state to compete in the USF Challenge on April 7-8 in Tampa, Fla.
