OPELIKA, Ala. – Troy senior Nicklas Borrmann flirted with history Sunday afternoon in the opening round of the Tiger Invitational at the RTJ Grand National Lakes Course before settling at 3-under par. The Trojans shot the fourth-best opening round in program history and are in third place following 18 holes of the event.
Borrmann was 7-under par after three straight birdies from the 11th thru the 13th after making the turn at 4-under par. However, a triple on the par-3 15th, followed by a birdie on No. 16 and back-to-back bogeys to close the day, settled his card at 3-under.
Southern Miss leads No. 7 Auburn by three shots at 15-under par, while Troy is six shots back in third. Louisiana Tech is fourth at 8-under par and Richmond is fifth at 5-under.
Borrmann paced the field with eight birdies on the day, while Troy's 22 birdies as a team were second only to Southern Miss' 24. The Trojans led the way with a combined 14-under par on the par-5 holes, were third at even on the par-4s but struggled with a 9-over on the par-3 offerings.
Brantley Scott fired his team-leading fifth round in the 60s with a 3-under 69 to find himself tied for ninth place with Borrmann. The Trojan sophomore made the turn at 2-under and went to 3-under after a birdie on No. 12. However, a bogey on the 13th pushed him back to 2-under, but he answered right back with a birdie on the par-5, 545-yard 14th.
Will McFadden closed strong and turned a 2-over into a 2-under in a span of three holes. Entering No. 12 with three bogeys and a birdie on his card, McFadden eagled the par-5 No. 12 and then dropped birdies on No. 13 and No. 14 to finish the day with a 70.
Jake Springer raced out to a 4-under start after 12 holes with four birdies but finished his round with his only three bogeys of the day to settle at 1-under and in a tie for 27th place. Will Simpson made the turn at 1-over par and was 2-over after a birdie on the 14th but ended with two bogeys to shoot 4-over.
Troy will play with Southern Miss and Auburn in Monday's main pairing beginning at 9:40 a.m. from the first tee box.
