TROY, Ala. – The Trojans got themselves in the win column in Sun Belt Conference play as two home runs from Shane Lewis and five innings from Brady Fuller helped propel Troy to a 7-5 win over ULM Friday night from Riddle-Pace Field.
With Troy (15-7, 1-3) leading 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth, Shane Lewis launched his 13th home run of the season and second of the night to give the Trojans much-needed insurance to secure the victory. Lewis finished the night with five RBIs and two runs scored.
After the night, Lewis now is tied for first in the nation in home runs, and his 40 RBIs on the season match the nation's leader heading into Friday games.
Brady Fuller (2-2) got back on track and earned his second win of the season after managing to go five innings, allowing four runs on four hits, two walks, and three strikeouts.
Following Fuller, Logan Ross managed to hold the Trojan one-run advantage through the middle innings as he threw 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball. Ross set the stage for Noah Manning to come in and get the five-out save for his fifth of the season, most in the Sun Belt.
For ULM (8-15, 0-4), they remain winless in conference play as starter Cam Barlow (1-3) get the loss after allowing five runs in the first two frames on four hits. However, Barlow kept his team in the game, going four innings with the bullpen coming in and shutting down the Trojan offense with Zach Shaw and Russel Derbyshire combining for two innings of no-hit baseball.
The Warhawks were led by Cardell Thibodeaux and had two RBIs on two hits. ULM had their chances but couldn't capitalize, leaving 10 men on base.
The Trojans still have some things to clean up defensively, as they committed five errors in the ball game the most this season but were not hurt by the mistakes as only one unearned run came around to score.
The Trojans nearly hit for the cycle in the first inning as Kole Myers led the game off with a triple, followed by Ethan Kavanagh reaching base for the 19th straight game with a walk. Two batters later, Kyle Mock doubled in the Trojans' first run, setting the stage for Lewis, who hit his first home run of the evening.
In the second inning, it was Myers and Kavanagh once again. With a hit and run on Kavangah singled to the right field gap, with the speed of Myers already in motion, he was able to score easily from first to give troy a five-run lead.
Things got interesting in the fourth and fifth inning as the Warhawks were able to scratch off two runs in each frame to get within one.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Warhawks got a man to second base and scoring position trying to tie the game, but Manning was called from the bullpen and stranded him there after striking out the batter.
Insurance runs came in the form of Lewis's second home run that stayed fair down the right field line hitting the foul pole. His long ball proved crucial as the Warhawks scratched across a run after a throwing error put a man on second, later scoring on a single.
The series continues on Saturday, March 25, as the two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. with the series finale to follow directly after.
