AUBURN, Ala. – A two-day meet at the Tiger Track Classic held at the Hutsell-Rosen Track saw seven Trojans hoist the gold with wins on Friday and Saturday to open the outdoor track and field season.
Four Trojans notched the win as a unit in the women's 4x100m relay. The finals set up Maya Kelly, Kierra Montgomery, Naveyh Frost and Shanyah Washington against West Alabama and Talladega. A quick start kept the team going until they crossed the line with a time of 46.20, defeating second-place West Alabama by 0.99 seconds.
Frost and Washington weren't done with top 10 finishes, competing in the women's 100m and 200m dashes. The pair competed against each other in the 200m, with the veteran of Frost finishing in seventh at 24.57, one spot ahead of the rookie in Washington in eighth at 24.81. However, Washington responded with a silver in the 100m at 11.70 in heat two, while Frost finished eighth at 11.86.
Tanner Guest joined her fellow Lady Trojans through a victory in the women's 800m. The senior battled with Sarah Delgado from Christian Brothers, pulling away in heat one by 0.07 seconds for the win. Vennessa Frank (2:19.65), Alexandria Rankin (2:22.59) and Kasia Cooper (2:23.80) also pulled out top 10 finishes in the event, coming across the stripe in fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively.
The men's side dominated the 1500m with 12 total competitors. Despite sitting in fifth after the first lap with a 47.906 time, Alexander Bendig saved his best for last. Two solid laps brought him to third before exploding on the fourth and final lap at 1:05.956, which was nearly two seconds faster than fellow Trojan Chance Armstrong to overtake him for first – Armstrong finished second at 4:12.274.
Troy's seventh winner came through Cole Stewart in the javelin throw. The junior carried his momentum from last season into his second throw of the event, launching to the 56.35m mark. No other competitor came within five meters from the winner as Luke Etherton came in second of Ole Miss at 50.40m.
Jackson Le Bleu made his presence known in his first outdoor event of his collegiate career, finishing fourth in the javelin throw at 47.16m.
Troy is back in action next weekend when they travel to Columbia, S.C., for the Weems Baskin Invitational from March 24-25.
