TROY, Ala. – Troy men's tennis opened the Sun Belt portion of its schedule with a thrilling 4-3 victory over James Madison on Saturday at the Lunsford Tennis Complex. The victory was Troy's 12th in its last 13 matches.
Troy (13-2, 1-0 SBC) picked up what turned out to be a critical doubles point after the teams split the six singles matches. Francisco Erramuspe and Mario Martinez made quick work on court three, winning 6-1 before JMU (7-5, 0-1) took a win on court one, setting up dramatics on court two.
Carles Anton and Yeray Andres Pastor powered their way to a 6-3 win on court two, putting the Trojans on top, 1-0.
Vito Linares put the Trojans up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court five, but the Dukes got back within one, 2-1, with a win on court two. Pastor pulled Troy within a point of clinching the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court three.
The Dukes bounced back with wins on courts four and six to tie the match and set up drama on the top court. Troy's star freshman Mario Martinez Serrano answered the call with a three-set victory over Holden Koons to clinch the match for Troy. Koons took the opening set, 6-3, but Martinez bounced back with wins of 7-5 and 6-0. Martinez bounced back from a pair of match points in the second set to force the decisive third set.
Troy continues Sun Belt play Sunday against Old Dominion at 10 a.m. at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
