LAKE JOVITA, Fla. – A pair of Troy golfers shot even-par in Tuesday's final round of the Spring Break Shootout at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club, and Elisabeth Preus tied for fifth to lead the Trojans to a third-place finish as a team.
Laura Fangmeyer and Alyssa Mercado turned in cards of 71 to close out the event, while Preus was 1-over on the day to finish at 2-over on the 6,040-yard, par-71 course. The Trojans did their damage on the par-5 holes, where they were 6-under as a team, second-best in the field, while their +24 on the par-4 offerings ranked third. Troy finished with 35 birdies and a tournament-best two eagles, both from Katelynn Altese.
Preus' finish was her best since tying for third at the Lady Bison Classic in February 2021. She wrapped play with a pair of birdies around three bogeys on Tuesday. She had just seven bogeys over her 54 holes of play, as she ranked second with 42 pars on a course where the average score was 5.5 strokes over par.
ShaeLee Scarberry continued her impressive senior campaign as she tied for 13th place at 5-over par with freshman teammate Laura Fangmeyer. Scarberry now has six top-16 finishes in Troy's seven events this season. She carded a 2-over 73 to close out play and finished the week sixth in the field with nine birdies.
Fangmayer completed her climb up the leaderboard following a disappointing opening round. She was even on Tuesday after a 1-under 70 in Monday's second round; she was tied for 42nd at 6-over par following the first round. She finished tied with Scarberry for sixth in the field with nine birdies.
Western Kentucky shot 2-under as a team Tuesday to claim the team title over a free-falling Morehead State, which shot 23-over after entering the final round in the lead. WKU finished 10-over for the week, followed by Florida Gulf Coast (+16), Troy (+20) and Morehead State (+27).
Altese, who carded a hole-in-one on Monday, added her second eagle of the week with a three on the 518-yard, par-5 No. 13 en route to shooting 6-over on the day and 14-over for the week. She tied with Mercado for 37th place after the latter carded four birdies on the day.
Troy has a quick turnaround as the Trojans are in Gulf Shores, Ala., beginning Sunday for the Bama Beach Bash at the Gulf Shores Country Club.
