LAKE JOVITA, Fla. – Elisabeth Preus and ShaeLee Scarberry are in the top 10 individually, and Troy is in fourth place following Monday's opening two rounds of the Spring Break Shootout at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club. Freshman Katelynn Altese had the opening day's highlight with a hole-in-one on the 151-yard No. 12, Troy's first hole-in-one in six years.
Preus and Laura Fangmeyer each had rounds under-par on the par-71 course, and the Trojans are just five shots out of second place with 18 holes to play on Tuesday. Morehead State is 4-over and in first place, while Florida Gulf Coast and Western Kentucky are tied for second at 12-over and Troy is fourth at 17-over par.
Scarberry and Fangmeyer are tied for fifth in the field with five birdies overall, while Katelynn Altese's eagle in the second round was one of six on the day.
Preus is tied for fifth place at 1-over par after shooting 2-over in the second round following her first under-par round of the season as she was 1-under 70 during the morning session. After starting on No. 5, Preus made the turn even and went to 2-under with birdies on No. 10 and No. 18.
Scarberry is close behind at 3-over in a tie for 10th place after shooting 1-over in the opening round with three birdies and a 2-over in the second round after four more birdies. Fangmeyer is tied for 17th place at 5-over after recovering from a tough opening round. She shot 6-over to start the day but bounced back with five birdies to card a 1-under in round two; the under-par round tied her with Scarberry for the team lead with six.
Altese's hole-in-one was the first by a Trojan golfer since Lindsey Harrison on Jan. 20, 2017, on the 132-yard No. 12 at the Johnie Imes Invitational. Altese shot even in the second round and is tied for 28th at 8-over par, while Alyssa Mercado is tied for 58th place at 14-over.
Teams wrap up play with 18 holes on Tuesday with a shotgun start in the morning.
