Trojans Swept in Conference Opener to South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis team opened its Sun Belt schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 loss to in-state rival South Alabama at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Trojans (7-3, 0-1 SBC) open their conference schedule with a loss for the third season in a row, while the Jaguars (11-1, 1-0 SBC) continue to improve with the best start in the conference.
Down 1-0 in doubles after Olivia Elliott / Andrea Widing dropped their match, Kristina Kukaras / Hagar Amin battled back to tie the Trojans up with a 6-4 win. On court three, Valeriia Avdeeva / Maria Guirguis battled Aoki Otoha / Doha Zeghlouli Chems for the match's first point. The Jaguars got the quick lead and led the way to the 6-2 victory, 1-0.
USA quickly battled to match point, sweeping Avdeeva, Kukaras, Elliott and Franziska Ahrend in two sets to clinch the win, 5-0.
Meanwhile, Guirguis was on court five, fighting with Doha Zeghlouli. In the first set, Guirguis fell 6-2, before battling back to take the second, 6-4. Doha Zeghlouli took control early in the extra set to lead throughout, 10-3.
Lastly, Amin looked to remain undefeated through dual singles with an 8-0 record. The match didn't start her way after a 6-3 loss. The Egypt native fired back with a 6-3 win. Despite staying tight throughout the set, Nikola Novotna took the advantage for the 10-5 win to sweep the Trojans.
