Troy Football Named No. 2 Team to Watch by CBS Sports

TROY, Ala. – Armed with the nation's second-longest active winning streak, Troy was recently named the No. 2 team to watch heading into the 2023 season by CBS Sports and veteran national football writer Dennis Dodd.

The Trojans are coming off a 12-2 season in which they won the Sun Belt Conference title and defeated nationally-ranked UTSA in the Cure Bowl. Troy ended the season winning its final 11 games, the longest such streak in the country behind only National Champion Georgia, and ranked in all three major polls for the first time in program history, peaking at No. 19 in the Associated Press Top 25.

Troy's 12 wins were the most of any program in the state of Alabama, tied for the most in program history and were the most by a Trojan team at the FBS level.Â

Head coach Jon Sumrall and his staff have added 38 players to the roster between the December and February Signing Days plus the transfer portal. The Trojans reloaded their roster with 19 high school prospects, 11 four-year transfers and eight from the junior college ranks.

(Ouch.) The defense carried the Trojans and should again after they held all 14 opponents under their season average. The battle to replace linebacker Carlton Martial should be interesting. The 5-foot-9 Martial leaves as the FBS all-time tackles leader. Coach Jon Sumrall is a rising star entering his second season.
