Bartolero and Stewart Lead Trojans to Sweep of Stony Brook; Trojans Win Seventh Straight

With a 9-2 lead in the top of the ninth, things got a bit shaky for the Trojans (7-0) as Stony Brook plated five runs on four hits and an error to make it a two-run ball game. Troy used three pitchers in the inning, with the third being Noah Manning (2), coming in and earning his second save of the season to preserve the win.
"We got to develop the knockout punch, and I have no doubt in my mind we will," head coach Skylar Mead said. "We have more than enough guys capable of doing it. The killer instinct will come. Being a little bit cleaner for all 27 outs is something we will focus on. Really proud of the overall performance both offensively and for Grayson Stewart,"
Grayson Stewart (2-0) had his stuff working all afternoon as he finished going five innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and a strikeout. The Seawolves scored the unearned run in the first but would not score again until the seventh.
Kyle Johnson (0-1) for the Seawolves (0-6) held the Trojans scoreless through the first three innings, but Troy was able to plate two runs in the bottom of the fourth for the lead and did not look back; Johnson finished the game going 4.1 innings allowing four runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Offensively it was Caleb Bartolero leading the charge as the senior finished the day with four RBIs, including two home runs to give him five on the season. The Trojans have now hit home runs in each of the first eight games, a streak that has not been accomplished since 2013.
Six different Trojans scored at least one run in the ballgame, with Ethan Kavanagh, William Sullivan, and Bartolero all with two.
Troy scored in three straight innings and scored six unanswered runs, all getting started in the bottom of the fourth as Kyle Mock's bat remained hot as he sent a double straight to Double's Alley to drive in Sullivan to tie the game. The lead came off a wild pitch, with Mock beating the throw home.
Three runs came in the fifth, beginning with Kavanagh singling to left field, bringing in Kole Myers. Bartolero would hit his first of two home runs to make it a five-run game.
The Trojans continue to cause havoc on the base paths stealing five more bases today. Coming into the ball game, they ranked second in the nation in stolen bases per game (5.00). They are 30 for 34 in attempts as their speed once again brought in a run as Kavanagh took off for second, allowing Clay Stearns to come home on the throw in the sixth.
They didn't know it yet, but Troy would need every one of the three runs they scored in the bottom of the eighth as Bartolero came up and hit a two-run home run followed by another Mock RBI.
Troy will once again be back at Riddle-Pace Field on Tuesday, February 28, as they welcome in in-state opponent UAB at 6 p.m.
