Seven Run Eighth Inning leads Troy to Fifth Straight Win

TROY, Ala. – Down 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth, a man on with two outs and in an 0-2 count, William Sullivan connected for his third home run of the season, sending Riddle-Pace Field into a frenzy as he tied the game started a seven-run inning for the Trojans en route to a 9-4 win Friday afternoon to give Troy five wins in five games.
"If one guy impacts a baseball, it's amazing that it can take the weight off the shoulders offensively," head coach Skylar Meade said. "It's why we stick to our approach and stay focused. We did a great job continuing to attack when the opportunity was there and kept playing fast and disciplined. We stayed locked in and grinded it out until the very end."
Following Sullivan's home run, four straight walks gave Troy the go-ahead run, but it didn't stop there as Hudson Hartsfield singled to right field, and Kole Myers singled to left to break the game wide open.
This is the second time this season the Trojans (5-0) have been down two runs in the eighth inning or later to come back and win after doing it last week against Evansville. The last time Troy scored seven runs in an inning was April 18, 2021, at Georgia State.
For the first time since Matt Sanders in 2017, a Trojan stole four bases in the same game as Tremayne Cobb Jr. finished with four, putting him in a position to score two runs.
In his second start of the season, sophomore Brady Fuller went 6.2 innings pitched, finishing with four strikeouts, three earned runs, and seven hits.
Keaton Fuller (1-0) followed Brady and shut down the Seawolves' offense. In 1.1 inning of work, Keaton Fuller struck out two, only giving up one hit.
For Stony Brook (0-4), Josh O'Neill (0-1) picks up the loss out of the bullpen going 3.2 innings and striking out six but allowing four runs. Starter Jared Bellissimo went four innings and was able to hold the Trojans at bay, giving up four hits and two runs.
The scoring got started in the top of the third as Stony Brook took advantage of a throwing error and plated a run after an Evan Giordano single gave the Seawolves an early 1-0 lead.
Troy nearly immediately responded in the bottom half of the third when Myers tripled, and Ethan Kavanagh walked to put two men on. However, the Trojans were unable to capitalize.
A walk and two stolen bases put Cobb Jr. on third, and a wild pitch later, he crossed home plate to tie the ballgame.
The tie didn't last long, with Stony Brook putting together a three-run inning in the top of the fifth with three runs on three hits.
A golden opportunity presented itself to Troy to tie the ball game in the bottom half of the inning, with Kyle Mock taking a first-pitch fastball 369 feet over the right field wall for his first hit of the season. A Hartsfield hit followed by a Stony Brook error put two men on with no outs. However, the Sea Wolves were able to leave unscathed with a strikeout and a double play to hold onto the two-run lead.
The Mock home run continues the home run Streak for the Trojans, as they have hit one in each of the first five games.
It wasn't the cleanest game played by the Trojans finishing with four errors resulting in an unearned run.
Troy and Stony Brook will continue their three-game series tomorrow, Saturday, February 25, at 3 p.m.
