BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – Led by a pair of individuals tied for fourth place, the Troy women's golf team opened its spring season with a strong performance as the Trojans set the program record for 36 and 54 holes and finished second in The Atlantic Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at the Indian Spring Country Club.
Troy's 854 is 16 shots better than the previous record of 870 set in the spring of 2016 for the lowest 54-hole score in program history, while Troy's 563 after the opening two rounds was the best 36-hole mark, three shots better than its performance at the 2019 Town & Country Invitational.
ShaeLee Scarberry and Laura Fangmeyer each shot a 2-under 69 on the par-71 course in Tuesday's final round to maintain their spot on the leaderboard as the pair finished in a tie for fourth place. The finish, score and placement under par were all career bests for Fangmeyer and season-bests for Scarberry.
Fangmeyer's 13 birdies over the three rounds tied for the second most of any golfer in the field, and she was among the leaders on the par 4 and par 5 holes, while Scarberry's 1-under on the par 3s tied for sixth best.
Troy shot 7-over as a unit in the final round and finished seven shots behind Florida Gulf Coast, who won the team title at 5-under for the week. The Trojans' 2-over par was five shots better than host Florida Atlantic and six shots better than Sun Belt rival Georgia State.
Elisabeth Preus and Alyssa Mercado both shot 5-over on the day to finish tied for 40th and tied for 50th, respectively. Mercado opened with a birdie on her first hole of the day and added a second on her 17th, while Preus had a birdie on her final hole, the 345-yard, par-4 fourth.
Bruna Roqueta shot 6-over on the day and finished in a tie for 31st place at 8-over par, and Samantha Straight carded an 8-over 79 to close out the week in a tie for 35th place at 9-over.
Troy returns to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Tchefuncta Invitational hosted by South Alabama in Covington, La.
