TROY, Ala. – Troy baseball made it four wins in four games to start the 2023 season after they defeated Alabama State 10-2 Tuesday night from Riddle-Pace Field.
The win gives the Trojans their second consecutive year with four straight wins and their 13th consecutive win over the Hornets of Alabama State.
"A lot of guys contributed, and it was a team win," head coach Skylar Meade said. "I thought we handled the baseball clean, turning a couple of double plays and finishing the game competing on all three levels, and I'm proud of our guys for doing that tonight."
For Troy (4-0), they have now scored 10 or more runs in three of their four games this season. Offensively, Caleb Bartolero and William Sullivan finished the night with two hits and two RBIs each. Both went deep as they continued the Trojan home run streak.
Alabama State (3-2) had a hard time finding the zone as Hornet pitchers walked a total of nine Trojan batters. Corey King and Ian Matos were responsible for the two Hornet runs. Marcos Del Valle (0-1) is given the loss after not making it to the third inning after giving up three runs.
After coming out of the bullpen over the weekend, Ben Thompson (1-0) earned his first Trojan win in his career after going three innings allowing only one run while striking out five.
Thompson ran into some early trouble in the second as Alabama State loaded the bases. With Troy up a run in a 3-2 count and two outs, Thompson blew a fastball by King to get out of the jam and preserve the lead.
As a staff, Trojans reached double digits again, finishing with 13 as Kristian Asbury also went three innings with five strikeouts out of the bullpen.
The Trojans continue to be a threat on the base paths finishing the game with four stolen bases, giving them 20 on the season through four games, and have yet to be caught, the fourth most in the country.
Troy was in control from the very first inning as they took advantage of the first of three Alabama State errors as Tremayne Cobb Jr. singled through the infield's left side, scoring Bartolero to give Troy the lead and not look back.
The game was broken open in the bottom of the sixth as the Trojans put up a five spot as Hudson Hartsfield drew a bases-loaded walk to start the scoring, followed by an Ethan Kavanagh single and a wild pitch to tack on two more. With the bases still loaded and nobody out, Bartolero grounded into a double play bringing in a run, with the sixth run coming from another Hornet error after a routine fly ball was dropped.
The Trojans will continue the home stand as they get set to welcome Stony Brook to Riddle-Pace Field for a three-game series beginning on Friday, February 24, at 2 p.m.
