Women’s Golf Opens Spring Season Monday

TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's golf team opens its spring season Monday with the opening 36 holes of The Atlantic Invitational hosted by Florida Atlantic at the Indian Springs Country Club in Boynton Beach, Florida.

The Trojans are coming off one of their most successful fall seasons in program history, posting a 295.60 scoring average, second by just 1.1 strokes to the 2019-20 squad. ShaeLee Scarberry and Alyssa Mercado tied at the top of the team leaderboard with a 1.83 score vs. par in the fall, and both will be in action for head coach Randy Keck's squad this week.

"I feel like we're in a little bit better of a place coming out of the winter than we have been in the last three or four years," Keck said. "Our scoring in qualifiers has been better, as has been our fitness work off the course. You can see it with our distance off the tee; I'm proud of their work on the course and in the weight room on their own over the break."

Scarberry is responsible for two of Troy's nine individual rounds under par, while freshman Katelynn Altese leads the Trojans with three rounds in the red this year. Elisabeth Preus missed the opening part of the fall before posting a 75.91 average in the final two events.

"It's a good driver's golf course, which fits in with what we do well," Keck said. "You have to hit a lot of drivers off the tee and make sure you keep them straight. It's a typical south Florida course that will force you to play soft with big greens."

Laura Fangmeyer also had a solid start to her collegiate career as the freshman played two rounds under par and finished the fall with a 2.20 score vs. par, the third-best on the team behind Scarberry and Mercado.

Brunca Roqueta will make her fifth appearance of the year, while freshman Samantha Straight is in the lineup for the second time as she makes her third appearance.
