TROY, Ala. – Coming off a competitive fall campaign, the Troy men's golf team heads into the championship portion of its schedule ready and rejuvenated for a challenging spring schedule, beginning this weekend at the Savannah Intercollegiate.
The Trojans return to Savannah as the defending tournament champions after winning last year's event, thanks in part to an 8-under 280 in the second round. Teams will face a new track this year as the event shifts back to Club Savannah Harbor after adverse conditions forced the event to a different location last spring.
"We're coming off a fairly successful fall where we gave ourselves a chance to win in three of the four events we played, and the majority of our rounds were under par," head coach Forrest Schultz said. "We've just reinforced that we have to go as low as possible every time we tee it off and can't take rounds off."
Troy played in four events in the fall and teed it up for 12 different rounds; the Trojans were under-par as a team in eight of those 12 rounds, and Troy's golfers combined for 20 individual rounds under par, led by five from Brantley Scott.
Scott, a sophomore, led Troy in the fall with a -0.58 stroke average, including a 70.25 average in the first round. He turned in top-5 finishes in three of Troy's four events in the fall and posted an 11-under 205, Troy's lowed 54-hole total on a par-72 course in 2-plus years.
Will McFadden and Nicklas Borrmann provide Schultz with a veteran presence on the course, and both shot within a stroke and a half of par in the fall with a combined eight rounds in the red. George Burch returns to the lineup after posting a 75.42 average with three rounds in the red during the fall and Jake Springer will also get the call. Jason Quinlan and Will Simpson will play as individuals in the event.
"When you look at our lineup, it speaks to our guys getting into our system and comfortable with it," Schultz. "The new guys who joined us in the fall, including Jason and Will, have really stepped up their games so far this spring and were right there in the mix in qualifying."
Teams will play 36 holes on Saturday and finish with 18 holes on Sunday.
