TROY, Ala. – Troy Softball returns to action this weekend, hosting both Kennesaw State and Murray State in the Troy Invitational at the Troy Softball Complex. Three games are on tap for Friday and Saturday, with play wrapping up on Sunday with a single game.
Â
Troy (2-2) plays at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and noon on Sunday; games featuring Kennesaw State (2-1) and Murray State (2-3) open Friday and Saturday's action at 11 a.m. All games on Friday and Sunday will be streamed live on ESPN3. Following this weekend's round-robin event, Troy will play 17 of its next 18 games away from home, with the lone home contest coming against Auburn on March 1.
Â
The Trojans split results during the opening weekend of play, defeating SIU-Edwardsville twice and dropping a pair of games to Belmont, including one in extra-innings to close the weekend.
Â
Libby Baker hit a pair of home runs, both in one-score games in the fifth inning or later, and Leanna Johnson struck out 20 batters, allowed just one earned run and picked up a pair of victories in the circle to lead Troy last week.
Â
Sophomore shortstop Natalie Turner showed off her speed as advertised with four stolen bases, the 10th most in the country per game (1.0) and new left fielder D'Aun Riggs blasted a pair of triples, tying her for first in the country.
Â
Offensively, Troy accounted for eight extra-base hits during the opening weekend of action, with Jade Sinness adding a pair of doubles to the tally. In the circle, Troy allowed its opponents just three extra baggers and held them to a .192 clip at the plate. Olivia Cato pitched six innings of one-run ball in her collegiate debut, coming out of the bullpen and earning a start.
Â
Kennesaw State split two games last weekend, winning against Tennessee Tech and losing to UT Martin before blanking Mercer, 7-0, on Wednesday. The Owls were picked to finish third in the Atlantic Sun. Murray State picked up wins over UTEP and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last weekend and was picked to finished second in the Missouri Valley.
