TROY, Ala. – As the Troy women's basketball program begins its 2023-24 season, head coach Chanda Rigby prepares her dynamic duo of sophomores Shaniah Nunn and Zay Dyer for an explosive year.
"We are expecting big contributions from our youngest players (Shaniah and Zay)," Rigby said. "Shaniah is in her second season and knows what we expect. She will play minutes at both the post and guard positions. Zay is already making an impact at our post position. She has won our rebounding competition at many practices already this year."
Nunn returns to Troy for her second season after competing in 23 games in her freshman campaign. The guard averaged 5.7 minutes with a shooting split of 28.9 percent from the field, 33.3 from deep and 59.3 from the free throw line.
Standing 6-0, Nunn made her Trojan debut at Samford, where she seized four rebounds, dished an assist and swiped a steal. The Birmingham native also knocked down her first career points from deep. She peaked on Jan. 26 when Nunn erupted for a career-high of 12 points and seven rebounds against rival South Alabama.
Coming to Troy from Georgia State, Dyer comes off a freshman season where she played in all 33 games and started 18 for the Panthers. Through 33 games, the Maynard Jackson High School graduate scored in double figures 11 times to average 6.5 points. She also ranked second for GSU in field goal percentage (50.5) and rebounds (5.5).
The Atlanta native made her collegiate debut against Agnes Scott, leading the team in scoring and rebounds at 17 and eight, respectively. Dyer also managed five double-doubles, including her first against Winthrop, with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The pair of sophomores make their season debuts against Ball State on Saturday at 3:33 p.m. for game one of the MAC-SBC Challenge in Trojan Arena.
