Â
TROY, Ala. – Larry Blakeney and Troy Football are one and the same, and the legendary head coach is returning to The Vet on Saturday, Nov. 18, for Larry Blakeney Day at The Vet in conjunction with the regular season finale against Louisiana.
Â
"It has been almost a decade since Coach Larry Blakeney roamed the sidelines at Veterans Memorial Stadium," Director of Athletics Brent Jones said. "I am very appreciative that Coach Blakeney and Janice Blakeney are allowing us to recognize and honor Coach one last time. We are calling on all his former players, coaches and staff to come back and help us honor and celebrate one of the greatest coaches in college football history."
Â
Troy's head coach for 24 seasons, Blakeney led the Trojans to eight conference titles and 178 victories, including wins over Mississippi State, Missouri and Oklahoma State. The all-time winningest coach in Sun Belt Conference history, Blakeney earned four conference coach of the year honors and is one of just two coaches to lead a program from NCAA Division II to the FBS ranks.
Â
The day will include a tailgate in Tailgate Terrace where all former players who played for Blakeney are invited back and can request up to four (4) complimentary tickets to the game. To request tickets, contact Judy Morgan, jmorgan@troy.edu. His former players will also be invited to join him on the field for a special presentation during the first quarter.
Â
All fans in attendance will receive a commemorative mini poster while supplies last, and Trojan Threads will have commemorative Larry Blakeney merchandise leading up to the game.
Â
A member of the Troy University Sports Hall of Fame (inaugural class) and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Troy named the playing surface in Veterans Memorial Stadium in his honor in the spring of 2011. Blakeney guided the Trojans to 15 winning seasons, including six seasons of 10 wins or more.
Â
Before Troy's jump to the FBS level, in eight seasons in the FCS ranks, Blakeney and the Trojans advanced to the national semifinals twice and the FCS postseason seven times, including an NCAA-record four consecutive seasons after making the move from NCAA Division II in 1993.
