BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Troy track and field team concluded their first meet of the 2023 indoor season at the Vulcan Invite with solid performances from numerous athletes in a multitude of events, including a new school record in the men's shot put with a 17.43m mark by sophomore Javon Osbourne.
"Coming off of a break, I didn't have an idea where we would be as a group," director Marc Davis said. "We had some very solid performances. Quite a few personal records and a broken school record. We have a long season ahead of us, and next week will be a very strong test of our abilities. We travel to the University of South Carolina, and the competition will be very stiff. We have the ability to do some excellent things there against Power five programs and conference rivals."
The day got started with the men and women 60m prelims. One of the first personal records to fall was Naveyh Frost, who qualified with a time of 7.57 and would finish second in the finals. On the men's side, freshman Tydreke Thomas began his Trojan career with a third-place finish, clocking in at 6.89.
Frost continued her strong outing in the women's 200m setting another personal record with a time of 24.52 in which she saw another second-place finish.
Troy had some spring in their step as the Trojans had first-place finishes in both the women's triple jump and men's high jump. Jade Johnson led the way on the women's side with an 11.73m mark, with Camryn Pettus in third place. Jaggerd Moore, in his first action of his Troy, came away in first place after recording a 2.00m mark.
After winning the 60m hurdles last year at this meet, Julian Martin-Rogers matched his personal record and came in second with a time of 8.14.
The women's shot put was dominated by the Trojans, seeing three top-five finishes led by Biniosa Ezukuse, who set a personal best with a 14.22m mark. Abby Grosinske and Leah Kennedy rounded out the top five in third and fourth place.
Other top 10 finishes for the Trojans included Alex Robinson in the men's 400m, Dwight Mason in the men's 800m, Lauren Locke in the women's 1 mile, and Tanner Guest in the women's 3000m. In the women's long jump, Kady Schwietz placed fifth, as did Tristian Boatman in the men's weight throw. The day concluded with a third-place finish in the men's 4x400 meter relay, with the women crossing the finish line in third in their event.
UP NEXT: Troy will travel to Columbia, South Carolina, next week for the Carolina Challenge spanning January 20 and 21st.
